The Time Machine (1895) | a 5 point review

The Time Machine
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Five point review: The Time Machine (novel, H.G. Wells, 1895)

[+] I was afraid a book well over a century old would be difficult to comprehend, but “The Time Machine” was quite an easy read.
[+] Although this is the first story ever written about time travel, the narrative is quite intriguing and original.
[+] It’s not just action and excitement, the plot is also a metaphor for the social and political atmosphere of the late 1800s.
[+] The framing device (the majority of the book is written as a flashback) makes for an intriguing perspective
[-] Although the story is well written, there’s not that much plot: the entire premise of the story can be summed up in one or two sentences.

Retconning Star Wars Legends | Part 2:

The Star Wars Expanded Universe has been rebooted. Almost every Star Wars book, comic, or other non-movie story that has come out in the past 37 years, was declared non-canon. Instead, these stories are grouped (and some of them reprinted) under the imprint “Star Wars Legends”. As of now, only the Star Wars movies, Clone Wars tv series, newer books and Marvel comics are considered Star Wars canon.

And there’s nothing we can do about it.

Or is there?

I’ve been thinking what to do with the collection of books & comics I have built up over the years. My bookshelf suddenly seems a lot less interesting, because of the contents not being part of official Star Wars Canon any more. “There must be a way for these works to have a more jusified reason for existence” I thought by myself. The idea that the existing stories aren’t dumped, but instead labelled as “Legends” inspired me. A few ideas to retcon the already published stories sprang to mind. The first one can be read here. And below is the second one.

An in-universe existence of “Star Wars Legends”

Ten points: things you didn’t know you did the wrong way around

Anybody who reads my blog, will notice I have certain pet peeves. For example earlier I blogged about parking your car the right way, and I still think more people (well, everybody) should do it like this. Without trying to sound like a smart-ass, I present ten other pet peeves, and the Life Hacks I found & devised to make life easier: Verder lezen

Top 10 double bill: recent & upcoming superhero movies

There aren’t many superhero movies I watched and did not like. Maybe “Daredevil” and “Batman & Robin”, but that was more than a decade ago. Recently, there have been some great superhero flicks, and by the looks of it, there’s even more potentially awesome stuff coming our way. So I present to you: Not one but TWO top 10s! Recent AND upcoming superhero movies.

Ten points: HFR

  • HFR is awesome.
  • All movies should be shown in HFR.
  • That’s because HFR means “High Frame Rate”.
  • “High Frame Rate” means video is displayed at a rate of 48 frames per second, instead of the standard 24 frames per second.
  • Which makes it infinitely more beautiful to watch.
  • Especially with moving images.
  • Okay, It takes some getting used to.
  • But especially combined with 3D, the visuals are more vibrant and lifelike.
  • Which makes movies more intense and more compelling to watch, even if you don’t notice the effect.
  • It’s a damn shame that there are only two HFR movies in wide release yet: Both “Hobbit” movies.
